On the occasion of  World Water Day 2026, dedicated by the United Nations to the theme Water and Gender, Maddalena promoted a special initiative in the heart of the Tarvisio Forest, engaging its employees in an immersive nature experience guided by Giulia Terlicher, a professional guide specializing in nature-connection experiences. The initiative aimed to reflect on the value of water, people’s well-being, and the deep connection between ecosystems and communities.

The experience took place in Bosco naTUra, a forest area managed by Giulia and her community and certified by PEFC, where participants took part in a forest bathing activity. This approach offers a different way of connecting with nature — slower and more mindful — encouraging listening, presence and regeneration.

During the day, the group — joined by members of the naTUra community — explored several forest trails, including the Water Trail, created thanks to the company’s support. This path leads to an alpine stream and invites visitors to rediscover the value of simple gestures: pausing, listening and allowing themselves to be refreshed by the sound and coolness of the water.

Right beside the stream, one of the most meaningful moments of the day took place: a guided meditation immersed in the silence of the forest, accompanied by the natural rhythm of flowing water.

At the end of the experience, participants received a small wooden drop made from beech wood from the forest, certified by PEFC — a simple yet meaningful object.

The creation of this symbol followed a process that highlights the territory and the work of local businesses.
In November 2025, together with Dr. Vedovato, a forester and responsible for the sustainable management and certification of the naTUra forest, a beech tree was selected to become the symbolic drops of the initiative.

The wood was then transported to Falegnameria Deotto in Valbruna, where it was cut and dried to obtain the material needed for the production process. Afterwards, Rizzardi Srl in Pavia di Udine crafted the drops and engraved each of them with the PEFC, Maddalena and naTUra logos. Each drop is completed with a blue rubber cord, symbolically recalling the colour and value of water.

This drop is meant to be a tangible symbol: a daily reminder of the value of water — a precious and limited resource that Maddalena has been helping to measure and safeguard for more than 107 years — and of the deep connection between forests, ecosystems and communities. A small sign that embodies the strength of trees, the work of the company and a shared commitment to safeguarding the future of water.

The journey of a drop of water begins in the sky, continues as it nourishes precious forests, and then reaches deep into the soil where, filtered, it joins other drops in the springs from which we draw the water that flows through our communities. But there is a question that deserves attention: What happens when the cellular network is temporarily unavailable? 
Even the most reliable networks can occasionally experience:

• scheduled maintenance
• failures of cellular network base stations

• local blackouts or exceptional events

In these situations, even NB-IoT–based remote reading systems may temporarily lose connectivity.
This is where an increasingly important concept comes into play: communication redundancy directly at the meter level.

NB-IoT and Wireless M-Bus: Two Complementary Technologies

Let’s imagine a smart meter designed with a dual communication architecture:

• NB-IoT as the primary channel for remote meter reading

• Wireless M-Bus (wM-Bus) as the secondary channel for proximity data collection

Under normal conditions, the meter communicates with the central system via NB-IoT, enabling automatic readings and remote event management.

However, if the cellular network becomes temporarily unavailable, the meter can still be read via wM-Bus, using drive-by or walk-by modes.

This approach allows utilities to maintain access to data even during temporary cellular network outages, avoiding operational disruptions.

The Benefits for Utilities

Integrating NB-IoT and wM-Bus in the same device offers several concrete advantages:

In recent days, Maddalena Spa hosted one of the regular meetings of IT Club FVG at its production plant. The company is an active member of the Club.

This year, the Executive Management — led by the fourth generation — made a clear choice: change the rules of the game. No traditional roundtable. No sequence of standard speeches.
The questions came directly from the people. Questions about business performance. Curiosity about markets. Broader concerns. Reflections on Lean. Discussions about the industrial model. Doubts and insights on strategic priorities.

An authentic exchange, facilitated by DOF Consulting, which has supported this journey since its beginning in 2024 and, once again, created a space for genuine listening.

Today, Maddalena is a community of nearly 200 people. And when an organization grows, alignment is not an operational detail — it is a strategic choice.

It means openly addressing the cyclical nature of our market. It means acknowledging the growth path achieved in recent years, the result of consistent industrial decisions and a long-term vision.

If the morning was about strategy, the afternoon was about courage — and a good dose of fun.

In 2025, around 30 process improvement projects were presented spontaneously — and they represent only a portion of the real work carried out across the company. 
These were not top-down initiatives. They were ideas born within departments, offices, and production lines — emerging from everyday problem solving. Small, concrete projects. Cross-functional projects. Ambitious projects.

Executive Management selected six projects based on three criteria: innovation, impact, and cross-functionality. 
But the final verdict was not predetermined. The vote was entrusted to the company community.

A QR code. A smartphone. And a question that seemed simple — only at first glance: “What truly improves the way we work together?”

The evaluation was not an automatic gesture. It was a statement of intent. The criteria were clear: innovation, measurable impact, and quality of presentation.

Not the project led by a colleague you work closely with. Not the one closest to your own role. But the one capable of generating value for the entire organization.

The six teams embraced the challenge. They used irony. They surprised the audience. Because yes, it is possible to talk about processes with a smile.
And it is possible to improve by working seriously — without always taking ourselves too seriously.

The energy in the room was concrete, tangible: genuine participation.

Making it even more vibrant was the collective work of DMAV Social Art Ensemble, which accompanied the day with a creative and engaging language.

The theremin performance by Walter Sguazzin added an unexpected, almost hypnotic dimension. And the shots by Bartolomeo Rossi did what good photography always does: transform a moment into memory — and a memory into a story.

With Decree No. 219 of 26 November 2025, which entered into force in January 2026, the regulatory framework governing metrological controls of water meters has been substantially updated, introducing a simplification that will have concrete effects across the entire market.

From an operational perspective, the first impact is a reduction in regulatory complexity. The elimination of distinctions between mechanical, static and venturi-type water meters allows operators and utilities to work within a clearer and more uniform regulatory framework, simplifying the planning of verification activities and reducing the risk of inconsistent interpretations.

A single verification deadline makes the management of the meter fleet more straightforward and facilitates coordination among operators, suppliers and inspection bodies.

The extension of the verification interval also has a direct impact on asset management strategies. With longer cycles, planning can no longer rely solely on regulatory deadlines, but requires greater attention to long-term metrological quality, performance stability and data reliability throughout the entire life cycle of the water meter.

In this context, the ability to maintain consistent performance over time becomes a key factor in ensuring operational continuity and service quality.

From a cost perspective, the new framework may translate into a reduction in operational burdens related to periodic verifications, with fewer field interventions and a more efficient use of resources. However, this benefit is real only if supported by measuring instruments designed to last over time and to ensure accuracy and reliability even across longer time horizons.

Another relevant effect concerns the positioning of technologies in the market. As regulatory differences between the various solutions are removed, competitive value increasingly shifts from the type of meter to the overall quality of the measurement system.

Stability, robustness, data protection and the ability to support advanced network management become distinguishing factors, in a context where measurement is increasingly a strategic tool for operational efficiency and water resource management.

Finally, the extension of verification cycles also fits coherently within a sustainability perspective. Fewer replacements and fewer interventions mean a reduction in environmental impact, greater process efficiency and more responsible infrastructure management. In this sense, the decree represents not only a technical update, but a step towards a more rational, long-term-oriented management model.

The second Academy, developed in collaboration between Maddalena Spa and Adecco, has just come to an end. Launched at the end of January 2024, this experience confirms the value and effectiveness of this training model.

“We strongly believe in Academies as an effective tool to support young people in their entry into the company: a pathway that fosters team integration, collaboration and knowledge sharing, allowing participants to undertake a professional training experience together.”

The participants in the project spent two years in the company under an apprenticeship contract, following a structured on-the-job training programme combined with classroom-based transversal training sessions. The Academy started with 8 participants and concludes with 7 of them ready to continue their journey at Maddalena under a permanent contract.

At the end of the programme, participants were assessed on both technical skills and transversal (soft) skills. On 27 January, we dedicated a moment of recognition to them, congratulating them on the path they had completed and awarding certificates of merit.

This is an important milestone that also marks the beginning of a new professional phase, requiring constant and increasing commitment, especially within a continuously evolving business context.

At a time of transformation and growth for Maddalena Spa, new opportunities for development and professional growth are also opening up for these young talents. A concrete example of how investing in new generations means building long-term value.

The naTUra Forest

The naTUra Forest is located in Ugovizza, in the municipality of Malborghetto-Valbruna (province of Udine), within the Millenary Forest of Tarvisio. It lies inside the Natura 2000 area, an ecological network of Sites of Community Importance (SCI) — the main instrument of the European Union’s policy for biodiversity conservation.

The naTUra Forest covers an area of 6 hectares and includes around 1,000 trees, mostly spruce, with smaller numbers of larches and beeches. It can be reached by car up to a parking area, followed by a 20-minute walk — first along a paved mountain road, then on a dirt path through the forest.

It is located in the mountains, away from the village, in a rural area surrounded by meadows, private chalets, and farm stays. The forest is part of the Puanina Tour, a network of trails connecting the various locations of the Ugovizza alpine area.

There is a local tourist office serving the area. Since 2023, the forest has been PEFC-certified for its sustainable management. In the future, the goal is to obtain additional certification for its recreational tourism and forest wellness services.

The naTUra Forest is truly the place where the naTUra project was born. It is the very environment that founder Giulia has known since childhood — where she learned to understand, listen to, and care for nature, guided by her parents and alongside her siblings. This forest represents both the story and the anchor of Giulia’s personal and professional life. Her grandfather Giacomo purchased the property 80 years ago, when it was just a meadow in the process of reforestation, and later passed it on to his daughter Cristina, Giulia’s mother. The naTUra Forest has since been allowed to grow naturally, and today it serves as a place of well-being and learning for many people.

The naTUra Forest Trail

Within the forest, a network of trails has been created, winding through its most enchanting areas for about 1 kilometer. The route is ideal for Forest Bathing sessions lasting from one to three hours.

Along the trail, visitors can observe the most distinctive features of the forest ecosystem — spruce, beech, and larch trees, mosses and lichens, mushrooms, anthills, a small stream, and breathtaking mountain views.

Along the trail, there are observation points dedicated to specific natural elements, as well as areas for breathing exercises, playful movement activities, and tree-connection experiences. At the entrance to the trail, a welcome sign provides information and guidelines for respectful behavior within the forest.

There are signs identifying the observation areas for each natural element, along with guidance panels to support the experience. At the amphitheater, a 30-square-meter stage hosts activities, and an information board shares the history of the forest and the family traditions connected to the place — designed to promote awareness and education. The trail can be safely walked, but it does require good mobility.

The community

The care and maintenance of the naTUra Forest are supported by members of the community, who contribute through voluntary donations and hands-on participation in maintenance activities.

As if they had adopted a small piece of the forest, these individuals stand at the forefront of virtuous actions that benefit the planet, the community, and themselves. The community also promotes an ecology of awareness, one that begins with building a sustainable culture. In doing so, it supports environmental education for children — each year, the community donates free nature experiences to schools and their teachers.

The community is made up of people from all over Italy, united by shared values of nature, well-being, and respect for the environment and for others. Every year, these individuals gather in the naTUra Forest to spend two days together, dedicated to regeneration and personal growth.

The Water Trail is currently under development and is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

We hope that the work will be well underway in time to celebrate a special moment: the World Water Day, which Maddalena and its team will experience in the naTUra Forest on March 22, 2026 — a shared journey of connection, respect, and awareness toward the element that has always inspired us.
