Just yesterday, a sponsorship agreement was signed at the headquarters of Maddalena Spa, in Povoletto (UD), between our company and the Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Udine Basket Club – UBC, for the Baskin section.

The contract provides for a three-year commitment and underlines Maddalena Spa’s focus on social initiatives, supporting young people and the community, this time with an even broader and more inclusive outlook.

“Baskin – BASKet-Inclusive – is in fact an extraordinary and unique discipline, as it actively strives to create a truly open environment and to bring together people with different abilities within the same team,” commented Gianna Rosso, Vice President of the Association. “Whether it is physical, mental/cognitive or sensory disabilities, gender or age differences, Baskin welcomes and values every individual without prejudice or limitations.”

In this form of inclusive basketball, both able-bodied and disabled people can come together to share their passion for the game, challenging and breaking down the barriers that often exclude some people from playing sports. It does not matter whether one can play basketball or not: Baskin offers everyone the opportunity to participate, learn and have fun together. This means that families, friends and communities can share experiences and moments of joy through sport, creating an unprecedented sense of cohesion and togetherness.

It is a recent sport that is now widespread internationally, and already has ten teams in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Maddalena Spa’s intervention will help support the team’s training and refresher courses, as well as finance the equipment required for training and matches – in addition to the two standard baskets, there are two additional ones with four rings positioned at different heights.

Franco and Clara Maddalena were present at the signing ceremony, along with Andrea Franzolini, Carlo Gnesutta, Gianna and Mauro Rosso representing Baskin – UBC.

We eagerly await, together with the association’s volunteers and the more than 35 families currently involved in the project, the re-opening of the autumn sports season!

The third in-depth look at the Corporate Sustainability Report is dedicated to the topic of Environmental Efficiency. In this article, the production process and its impact on the environment will be examined in depth, analysing both the data on CO2 emissions and the performance achieved during the two-year period under analysis.

Maddalena S.p.A. adopts a horizontal production organizational model and makes component traceability and metrological verification indispensable aspects of the production process.

Assembly, metrological testing and marking are at the heart of the process. The input materials used by the Company can be traced back to the components that are assembled to make the finished product, as well as packaging materials.

All outgoing waste is introduced to supply chains for disposal and eventual recovery; Reducing waste generation and increasing the material recovery rate is part of the company’s plans, a goal it also counts on achieving through collaborations with strategic partners and shared visions.

The production plant

Following the work carried out on the occasion of the company’s centenary, the production plant has reached a total area of over 15,000 m2. The extension and redevelopment works have also made it possible to make the spaces more efficient from an energy point of view: the factory is classified with energy class A4 and its roof was built with ONDAL® insulation panels and a 156-kW photovoltaic system that today covers about 20% of the company’s energy needs and is currently being extended to almost double it.

There are also charging stations for electric cars in the parking lot outside the new management area, an incentive for sustainable mobility.

Monitoring and reduction of consumption

Maddalena S.p.A. is not an energy-intensive company and is therefore not required to carry out energy audits. Direct and indirect emissions of CO2 equivalent mainly refer to the purchase of electricity, the use of methane gas for heating purposes and fuel consumed by company cars. They are divided into Scope 1 (direct emissions, deriving from the direct use of fossil fuels) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions, deriving mainly from electricity purchases) and monitored annually.

Maddalena, through its first Sustainability Report, has chosen to adopt an efficiency monitoring system to assess the organization’s environmental performance.

The efficiency monitoring system is summarized graphically by a radar map in which 2020 is currently the base year against which comparisons can be made.

For each environmental class, a synthetic efficiency index is calculated, weighting the indicators for hours worked, pieces produced and turnover, normalised to 100 in the base year. Each index is constructed in such a way that its increase or decrease represents, respectively, a worsening or improvement in environmental performance relative to the base year.

Compared to the previous year, 2021 saw an improvement: the increase in efficiency is consistent in all the different environmental classes, a positive trend that Maddalena S.p.A. will strive to pursue in the future.

Maddalena S.p.A. renews its role as the Grand Ambassador of Illegio again for the year 2023. The theme of the 19th exhibition in Illegio is “Flesh, the Matter of the Spirit.” The exhibition features more than 40 works tracing 2,500 years of beauty, from the 6th century B.C. to the early 20th century.

What is the theme of the 19th Illegio exhibition?

The gaze focuses on the flesh, understood as a fundamental dimension of our being. The artworks are signed both by fine artists all to be discovered and by the greatest masters in art history, such as Donatello, Canova, Peter Paul Rubens, Gerrit van Honthorst, Giambattista Tiepolo, and Eugène Delacroix.

Flesh as a fundamental dimension of our being gives us sensitivity, concreteness, identity, and location in time and space; flesh as a meditation on the experience of change, one of the most important human capacities. Present and operational at the first 2023/24 meeting of The European House of Ambrosetti’s Value of Water Community, a network of 38 partners in the extended water supply chain now in its 5th year of work.

The meeting shared scenarios, strategies and policies for the water supply chain in Italy and the optimization of its development. A supply chain that has more than 20 billion euros of turnover, more than 300 thousand employees, 200 thousand km of covered water network and 3,500 billion euros of assets under management.

Maddalena’s contribution

We note a clear growth in demand for water meters in the Italian market, which is finally catching up with the numbers of markets such as Spain, although it is still far behind France and Germany in terms of the number of pieces produced.

This growth, found mainly in the Utility sector, is due to the replacement of old meters, as required by DM 93/17, and to the PNNR funds for the monitoring and reduction of water losses. A positive aspect is an increase in the demand for smart meters, which in 2022 exceeded 75% of the market share, placing Italy among the European leaders in investment.

However, it seems that this acceleration is mainly attributable to the regulatory concessions related to the extension of the period for meter replacement, rather than the real willingness of utilities to employ and use smart meters. Moreover, there is a risk of being unprepared to cope with the technological leap needed on this complex vertical. It would be good to learn from the Utility’s previous experience in the gas sector in previous years, which has seen massive replacements and a roll-out of smart meters.

It would be wasteful to use PNRR funds inefficiently, considering that the main objective stated in DM93/17 is the simple replacement of old meters in order to bring the instruments in line with metrological and health regulations. Moreover, it should be considered that the high demand for smart meters and the time restrictions for accessing PNRR funding do not fit well with the current context of shortage of electronic components and limited supply.

How to intervene on DM93/17

Maddalena S.p.A. remains strong in the opinion that a revision of DM93/17 is needed, in particular:

• Providing annexes describing how to perform periodic verifications, which are currently still missing;

• Correcting Annex IV to equalize verification intervals between static and mechanical meters. It is important to remember that Italy is the only state in the Union to make this distinction, violating the European principle of technology neutrality;

• Broadening the scope to also include household divisional meters (Submetering), considering that such meters are suitable for economic transactions and therefore regulated by the MID Directive.

Finally, in order to take a broader view that includes the irrigation sector, it is important to raise awareness of the adoption of measurement and management tools in the irrigation consortia sector as well, something that has been happening for years only in southern Italy.

The journey through Maddalena S.p.A.’s Sustainability Report continues with this second in-depth look at Corporate Governance and Economic Performance.

Maddalena S.p.A. it’s an independent company, family-owned, which sees the third and fourth generations working side by side. The Company adopts the traditional system of administration and control having as its main bodies the Board of Directors, the Board of Statutory Auditors, and the Shareholders’ Meeting. The legal audit of the Company is the responsibility of the Board of Statutory Auditors.

Franco and Clara Maddalena, who took over from their father, Giovanni Battista, in the 1980s, serve as Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the Company and are its Managing Directors together with their grandson Andrea Contin. Giovanni Maddalena and Filippo Fontanelli together with their cousin Andrea, are the fourth generation of the Company, each with their delegation, the first to the Sales Management, the second to the Technical Department, and the third to Management Control and Administration.

The structuring of an Integrated Management System is a very important aspect for Maddalena S.p.A. and its complexity requires a coherent approach in the management of numerous aspects that now include quality, health and safety, environment, data security, and sustainability. The company has long adopted an Organizational Model 231/2001

Fields of application

The main reference market of Maddalena S.p.A has always been that of water meters aimed at the Utility sector, starting with the Italian market and then expanding the business abroad. To date, the Submetering market share represents about 40% of turnover with significant growth expected in the coming years.

Distributed value

The perspective of the Sustainability Report differs from that of financial reporting: it looks at how the value produced rewards all stakeholders of the organisation

A means of building a dialogue with all stakeholders, this document provides an account of the company’s performance and impacts on environmental, social and economic (ESG) aspects and helps the company highlight sustainability opportunities and risks with the ultimate goal of creating shared value and improving the company’s reputation and competitiveness.

The Sustainability Report is thus a way to expand the concept of generated value, which is not limited to the creation of profits or shareholder remuneration, but also includes that of all other stakeholders involved in the company’s business, such as employees, customers, suppliers, local institutions and the community.

Suppliers, valuable partners.

In order to operate successfully worldwide, Maddalena S.p.A. works with companies that are very different in terms of size, organisation, and product. The conformity of incoming components is guaranteed by the choice of strategic partners, in a logic of product co-design and self-certification. Furthermore, Taking into consideration the relationships that account for at least 0.3% of the total value of supplies, we can say that 66% come from companies headquartered or with their operating center in Italy, and the remaining third from foreign companies.

The SA8000 approach introduced a supply chain assessment system also based on social responsibility requirements.
The profiling methodology initiated a qualification process that, combined with what was already envisaged and developed through the Integrated Management System, helps to prevent potential risks linked to the violation of workers’ rights by suppliers.

On the occasion of the World Day for Health and Safety at Work, which is celebrated every 28 April, Maddalena S.p.A. is pleased to announce the launch of the new edition of the EkitaLab Legal Design Course, realised in partnership with Animaimpresa, Percorso Sicurezza S.r.l., Trakti Ltd. and Legalnext.

The course, which is unique in terms of the preparation of the lecturers, the choice of subjects, and the workshops offered, aims to create new skills for the application of Legal Design techniques and methodologies in order to improve the communication of legal content and facilitate interactions between people and legal systems.

What is Legal Design?

Legal Design is a multidisciplinary approach to design in the legal field. It is a subject that involves several professionals working together with the aim is to create more user-friendly legal systems and services. The main characteristic of legal design is to put the recipient at the centre with the aim of improving content communication.

Maddalena S.p.A. as case study

The course is strongly focused on the application aspect and is developed within a workshop designed according to the criteria of experiential teaching also known as “learning by doing“.

The workshop part directly involves Maddalena S.p.A. and its employees as a case study, putting them at the center of a project designed specifically for safety at work and concerning risks in the handling of materials and interference between vehicles and people.

Maddalena S.p.A. pays particular attention to the health and safety of its employees. Every year the company provides specific training courses on the subject and can boast a state-of-the-art Integrated Management System.

The collaboration with EkitaLab now becomes a tangible opportunity to share interdisciplinary expertise in the name of fostering and spreading a culture of health and safety in the workplace, and makes a symbolic contribution to what is called Goal 18 of Agenda 2030: Culture of Safety.

Maddalena S.p.A. obtained the SA8000 Certification in 2021 and since then it has continued to improve its social performance, as evidenced by the positive results of the annual inspection audit carried out on the 12^th of April 2023 by the CISE certification body.

La norma SA 8000:2014 (SA: Social Accountability) è il primo standard diffuso a livello internazionale circa la responsabilità sociale di un’azienda; è un modello gestionale che si propone di valorizzare e tutelare le risorse umane delle organizzazioni che lo adottano e che vogliono distinguersi per il loro impegno nello sviluppo sostenibile, in particolare per le tematiche sociali.

Social Fingerprint

The Social Fingerprint is a social performance self-assessment tool based on nine indicators regarding the Management System. Each indicator is evaluated on a scale that goes from 1 to 5, where 1 represents a low performance and 5 represents an excellent performance.

The average result obtained by Maddalena in 2022 is of 4,2, which has increased with respect to the 3,7 reached in 2021. This means that the Company has achieved a high maturity level in managing social responsibility and has demonstrated a constant commitment to continuous improvement.

Supply Chain

Furthermore, during this last year, the Company implemented a process of sharing the principles of SA8000 not only internally but also with the most relevant suppliers and partners: this initiative has the goal to extend the social responsibility throughout the entire value chain and to prevent potential risks linked to the violation of workers’ rights by suppliers. Requesting documentary evidence or filling sustainability ratings is a consolidated practice within the entire supply chain, and also Maddalena chose to fill, for example, the Ecovadis ESG Rating in order to meet the clients’ requests.

Good practices

During the inspection audit have been highlighted some “good practices” carried out by the Company and that we would like to share:

• Maddalena Learning Center, a multimedia platform dedicated to in-person and distance training: within the system, already known to the auditors, in-depth training courses on the labor contract and payroll reading were also uploaded and made available during 2022. The objective of these courses was to increase transparency and understanding of pay items and contract terms and conditions, important for the norm.

• Corporate Butler, an initiative co-financed by the Call #Conciliamo , implemented with the contribution of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – Department for Family Policies. Considered an innovative figure within the Italian corporate landscape, the Corporate Butler is an employee who is responsible for providing services and assistance to colleagues with the aim of facilitating work-life balance. Examples of services fulfilled by the butler include booking medical appointments, picking up medications, small purchases and phone calls, paying bills, etc.

• SA8000 KPIs infographic: a graphic document that illustrates in a simple and clear way the main corporate performance indicators as of 12/31 each year, now in its third edition. The infographic not only provides an overview of Maddalena’s social sustainability numbers, but also contains a QR code to report any complaints or suggestions to members of the Social Performance Team (SPT). 

The implementation of the new corporate website in October 2022 enabled the introduction of an in-depth section devoted specifically to sustainability. Ample space was reserved for actions and achievements in the ESG sphere, Agenda 2030 issues and, of course, the SA8000 Standard. In addition, the topic under certification also found space within the Company’s first Sustainability Report.

Maddalena S.p.A., conscious of being at the beginning of its sustainability journey, demonstrates once again to be one of the most cutting-edge sustainable companies in Friuli Venezia Giulia in the field of corporate social responsibility, able to combine economic success with respect for people and the environment.

During these years the Company has undergone an important evolutionary transition culminating precisely with the first Sustainability Report: an important phase, which allowed us to move from an unconscious Sustainability – pursued but not recognized – to a conscious Sustainability well-recognized in the Company and therefore considered as a strategic value in international markets.

As stated by the Deputy Chair and Managing Director Clara Maddalena within the opening letter addressed to Stakeholders, “It was not just a punctual analysis, but the start of an organizational change that today guides our choices and permeates every action of the Company with a vision that becomes a growth factor for the future of Maddalena S.p.A.”.

Through a narrative that will consist of five monthly installments, Maddalena’s marketing and sustainability department thought about accompany readers with these pills that deeply analyze the key points of the document for a quick but accurate reading.

Reporting principles

The reporting principles chosen by Maddalena S.p.A. for content definition are one of the pillars on which the Sustainability Reporting was built and have been summarized through immediately clear icons.

Alongside the reporting principles there is the use of the GRI Standards: a uniform system of indicators that guide organizations in transparently reporting their results, across all dimensions of Sustainability, namely environmental, social and governance.

Stakeholder Engagement and Material issues

Relevant, or material, issues are defined as those issues that achieved a high rating of interest from both the Company and external Stakeholders. Within this simple sentence there are some fundamental concepts aimed at a proper management of the Sustainability within a company:

• Material issues: the sustainability issues that are a priority for the Company’s internal and external Stakeholders.

• Stakeholder engagement: the engagement of “those who bring the interest”, both internal and external, in the definition of the material issues.

• Materiality Assessment: the process that leads to the definition of the issues on which focusing in the short term and that is carried out through a stakeholder engagement path and in compliance with the GRI Standards.

Within the Company’s Materiality Matrix it is possible to identify the different issues, categorized according to ESG criteria: environmental, social and governance, as well as the degree of relevance that they have for the external stakeholder and for Maddalena S.p.A..

Reporting principles, materiality assessment, and stakeholder engagement enable to best set up the company’s sustainability reporting and strategy, being clear about where to go and which sustainability issues to address.

The third edition of the scholarship named after engineer G.B. Maddalena worth €10,000, established for the first time in 2019, on the occasion of the company’s 100th anniversary, has also been confirmed for 2023.

The initiative, reserved for the children of the company’s employees enrolled in secondary school and intending to enroll in university, aims to contribute concretely to the cultural and professional growth of future generations. Investing in youth training, in fact, is a very important aspect especially from a social point of view as it simultaneously means enabling young people to acquire skills that lead to a personal and specialized growth.

The project is in line with the goal number 4 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and to promote inclusive learning opportunities for everyone.”

AlmaLaurea’s 2022 report about the profile and employment status of graduates highlights how the economic, cultural and social status of the family of origin can be impactful in the decision to pursue a higher education. The possibility of obtaining a scholarship such as the one provided by Maddalena S.p.A., certainly represents a great opportunity for the children of the Company’s employees to start building their future from the solid foundation of knowledge.

This initiative is also one of the many Social Sustainability projects that also led to the drafting of the Company’s first Sustainability Report, which has been recently presented.

The “G.B. Maddalena” Scholarship is renewed every three years for reasons related to the composition of the corporate population, and goes to fund undergraduate pathways for those who meet the merit requirements set forth in the call for applications.

Today, 22 March, is World Water Day, an anniversary established by the United Nations in 1992 to raise awareness of the importance of this vital resource for our planet.

This year’s theme is the link between water and climate change, two challenges that require urgent and coordinated action by all actors involved. Water is indeed a vital resource for life and the sustainable development of our country and the world. However, it is also scarce and vulnerable to the effects of climate change and growing demand from various economic and social sectors.

White Paper “Valore Acqua per l’Italia”

To commemorate this anniversary, our Company has chosen to participate in and promote the presentation of the fourth edition of the White Paper “Valore Acqua per l’Italia” (Water Value for Italy) edited by The European House – Ambrosetti Community, of which Maddalena S.p.A. has been a member since 2020, the first in its field.

An event, held today in Rome, which has brought together all the institutional and economic protagonists of the Italian water world and which has highlighted how the infrastructural less than perfect conditions of the extended water supply chain and the growing demand on the water resource require us to change our mindset quickly.

Maddalena’s actions

Our corporate orientation sees an increasingly marked approach to Sustainability and a vision aimed at spreading the culture of smart water metering – through communicating meters . We are very aware of the fact that an efficient and sustainable management of water resources can no longer disregard the application  of  “Smart&Digital Water” concept. An idea that insists on the reduction of water withdrawals, consumption and waste through innovation and technological efficiency and that is realised through the digitalisation and integration of infrastructural and production assets in the extended water supply chain.

Also in terms of new product, Maddalena is ready to answer the call of the PNRR and in general to that of the international scenario with the new water meters of the ElecTo range which, exploiting a platform of electronic radio register with native wireless data communication, combine the precision of measurement and data communication in a single instrument; all of which allows costs to be reduced and service to be made more efficient.
